MANASQUAN, NJ � "Proof," a remarkable and luminous play about fathers and daughters, genius and insanity, and legacy and truth, comes to the stage at Algonquin Arts Theatre for two performances on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.

Produced by the renowned Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, "Proof" tells the story of 25-year-old Catherine, who cared for her mentally ill father Robert, a mathematic genius, until his death. Catherine � who herself possesses a gift for math � joins Hal, one of Robert's former students, to go through her father's work searching for anything of value when a proof is discovered.

An award-winner from playwright David Auburn, in 2001 "Proof" won the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.

Four years later, Auburn adapted "Proof" for a 2005 film adaptation that starred Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Tickets are $27 for adults, $25 for seniors and $18 for students and can be purchased online at algonquinarts.org, by phone at 732-528-9211 or in person at the Algonquin Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 12-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Each ticket subject to a $2 processing fee. The production is generously funded in part through a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour.

"Proof" marks Kate Galvin's directing debut with the Walnut Street Theatre, and she works with an amazing cast led by crowd favorite Bill Van Horn who plays Robert. Alex Keiper plays Catherine, and "gives a stellar performance" according to Stage Magazine. The cast also includes David Raphaely (Hal) and Krista Apple (Claire). The Philadelphia Inquirer recommended the current Walnut Street Theatre production more highly than the Broadway original.

The Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest theatre in America, founded in 1809. In 1982 it returned to its origins as a producing theatre under the internationally known producer, Bernard Havard, and it now boasts more than 56,000 subscribers. Under his leadership, the Walnut established a strong commitment to artistic excellence and a dedication to developing American theatre artists through its nationally known programs, including its highly regarded apprentice program.

"Proof" is presented as part of the 2011-12 Broadway Series at Algonquin Arts Theatre. The series continues in March with "A Year With Frog & Toad" and in April with "The Music Man." Patrons can purchase packages of two or three shows to receive up to 15 percent off.
