MANASQUAN, N.J. (July 30, 2012) - The incredible musical journey of Oliver Twist comes to Manasquan as Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" takes the stage at Algonquin Arts Theatre for eight performances starting Friday, August 3 at 8 p.m.
The theatre's annual summer musical extravaganza features a extraordinarily talented cast of 65, a live orchestra and an elaborate set and costume design that will take patrons back to Charles Dickens' 19th-century London on the 200th anniversary of the renowned British author's birth.
Opening on August 3, the run continues on August 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12. There will be Friday and Saturday night performances with an 8 p.m. curtain, two Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. and two Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.
Tickets are on sale now online at algonquinarts.org, by calling 732-528-9211 or stopping by the Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. on weekdays and 12-4 on Saturdays. Regular tickets are available for $28 for adults, $26 for seniors and $18 for students. Premium tickets the first 10 rows of the orchestra center section are available $33, $31 and $23, respectively. A $2 processing fee is applied to each ticket.
The title role, Oliver Twist, will be played by Brielle's Luke Pearlberg, 12, for the Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon performances and by Wall's Jake Walsh, 9, last seen as Winthrop Paroo in "The Music Man" in April for the Saturday matinees.
Many of the Algonquin Players regulars return for this production, most notably Ali Gleason (Nancy) who starred as the Narrator in last summer's extravaganza "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Among the other familiar faces on stage will be Douglas Moore (Fagin), Matt Giunco (Artful Dodger), Ian Moore (Bill Sikes), Eric McDonough (Mr. Sowerberry/Dr. Grimwig), Howard Whitmore (Mr. Bumble), Pati Shaffer (Widow Corney) and Danielle Yucht (Bet).
Veteran director Robert Johanson, who also directed "Joseph Dreamcoat" and "The 1940's Radio Hour" returns to direct his fifth production at Algonquin Arts Theatre.
First presented in London, where it played for 2,618 performances at the New Theatre, "Oliver!" played for 774 performances on Broadway. This engaging three-time Tony Award winner appeals to the emotions with its drama and delights with outstanding music including "Food, Glorious Food," "I'd Do Anything," "Where is Love?," and "Consider Yourself."
Algonquin Arts Theatre was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organization to provide cultural enrichment and educational enhancement of the highest quality for Central New Jersey residents.
